Persians

Persian cats are often considered royalty among purebreds and are the most popular breed of purebred today.  Persians are distinguished by their beautiful, long coats; short, cobby bodies; round heads and eyes; and their sweet, docile temperaments.  They make ideal companions and are known to prefer the company of their humans more than that of other cats.  This is not to say that Persians won't thrive in a multi-cat household.  They can, but don't be surprised if your fluffy feline would rather bask in your presence than play a game of "chase me" with her kitty companion.

 "Fur-st" Things First

If you think a Persian cat is the pet for you, remember, because of their fur, they do require some maintenance.  To prevent mats in their fur, brush them daily with a wire brush or detangling comb designed especially for long-haired cats.  Mats can be painful. If your Persian has developed mats that can't be combed out - or if he won't allow a brush within swatting range - you'll have to cut the mats out.  Be extremely careful not to cut the cat's skin!  If the mats are severe, it's sometimes difficult to know where they end and the skin begins.  Snip little bits of the matted fur at a time, until it can be combed out easily.  Worst case scenario - have your cat groomed by a professional who will only resort to the "lion cut" after trying other ways to demat your cat.  Not familiar with a lion cut?  It's when the head and tail fur are left long and the body and leg fur are shaved razor close.  You wouldn't put up with a "do" like this.  Neither should your cat.  Speak with your vet or pet products supplier if your cat is prone to hairballs.  He or she can recommend an oral hairball remedy.

A Fashionable Face

Believe it or not, there are trends in Persian facial conformations.  Breeders perpetuate physical as well as behavioral characteristics in their kittens.  At this time, cats with a more severe facial conformation are in vogue.    Unfortunately, these cats are also more prone to upper respiratory infections and problems including breathing difficulties and drippy eyes due to blockages or distortions of the ducts that drain tears into the nose.  Note:  White and light-furred Persians often have brownish red "tear stains" under their eyes.  Contrary to what some believe, the cat's tears are not bloody.  This is normal and can be dealt with by gently wiping the area with cotton pads moistened with warm water.  Or you can avoid these health and grooming issues altogether by getting a "pretty-faced" Persian, that will have a longer nose, larger sinuses - and all the wonderful characteristics attributed to this breed.

Good Breeding

Generally speaking, Persians make excellent parents.  On average, they have small litters with a high survival rate.  However, if you are not planning to breed your cat, have it neutered as soon as is recommended by your veterinarian.

Persians and other purebred cats and dogs can be found in shelters.  If you are looking for a cat or kitten, why not save a life and  make the local animal shelter your first stop?
