Scientists believe that cats, once thought to be color blind, can actually see shades of blues and greens. Discerning one color from another, however, is not crucial to a cat's survival in the wild, which is probably why they don't see the world through rose-colored glasses. * * * Cats can get acne, or at least something akin to it. Chin Pyoderma is a bacterial infection that affects the chin area of some cats. Regular cleansing with a mild soap can help, although the problem can recur. If something stronger is warranted, see your vet who can recommend antibiotics and an astringent cleanser. (Don't use human acne cleansers on your cat as they might be too strong.) * * * Although it can be difficult, it is possible to tame an adult feral cat. It just takes time, patience and food. A little love goes a long way too, towards the successful outcome of this process. Experienced cat trappers and tamers believe that it's the individual cat's disposition that determines whether or not it can be tamed. It had been commonly thought that only kittens up to a certain age could be tamed, but people who regularly rescue ferals are reporting this is to be erroneous. * * * We get tons of email asking us how readers can determine the sex of their kittens. This is difficult, until the kitten is about three months of age at which time, their sex organs become more apparent. * * * Many people get their dogs teeth cleaned on an annual basis. Teeth cleaning is important for cats too, who, like dogs, can be plagued with periodontal disease. This can lead to the loss of teeth or, in serious cases, can spread bacteria to internal organs. You can help prevent periodontal disease by regularly brushing your cat's teeth. We know this is easier said than done, but start by rubbing the cat's teeth gently with a gauze pad. Once the cat gets used to this, you can graduate to a toothbrush. Use a child's soft toothbrush or one that is specially formulated for cats. In addition, use a specially formulated pet toothpaste as opposed to one you yourself might use. Also, have your cat's teeth examined annually as part of his regular checkup. [ Top ] |
