Frequently Asked Questions from our Readers

Following are some questions submitted by readers.  We will address additional concerns in a future update of cat-E-corner.com.

Q:  How long do cats live?

A:  Today, the average lifespan of an indoor cat is about 8 to 16 years.  We've heard of cats living into their 20s!  Of course, your cat needs routine annual checkups and vaccinations from the veterinarian, proper diet, exercise and lots of love in order to live a healthy, long life.

Q:  How do cats purr?

A:  No one is exactly certain what enables the cat to make that incredible sound, but scientists think it's caused by the vibration occurring in a major blood vessel in the cat's chest.  The sound of this vibration is then thought to be transmitted through the cat's air passages resulting in the characteristic purr.  Kittens begin to purr at about one week of age.  Incidentally, cats don't only purr when they are content.  They will purr from fear and will also purr when they are in pain.

Q:  Why do cats knead?

A:  Kneading, gently pushing its paws against you, is a behavior exhibited by nursing kittens to help draw out the milk from their mother.  When an adult cat kneads, it's a sign, not that the cat is thirsty, but that the cat is content and happy.

Q:  Can cats see color?  I buy my cats  colorful little balls and toys.  Should I continue to do so, or should I concentrate on buying her only one color?

A:  At one time, scientists thought that cats were colorblind and could only discern shades of grey.  Now they believe that cats can see certain colors, primarily blues and greens.

Q:  What should I feed my cat?

A:  One of the reasons for the increased longevity of today's housecats is their improved nutrition.  There are many nutritionally complete and balanced cat foods available at pet stores, online merchants and veterinarian's offices everywhere.  To find out the best food for your cat or kitten, speak with your veterinarian who will be able to suggest one.  Contrary to what many think, cats do not need a variety of tastes in their diets.  Therefore, when you find an appropriate product, stick with it, unless the dietary needs of your cat change with age, illness or some other factor.  Many pet food companies formulate their products for various needs, such as for kittens, the senior cat, the less active cat, cats with kidney problems, etc.  Again, your vet will be able to tell you what is needed by your cat to ensure that its dietary requirements are met.

Q:  How long is the gestation period for cats?

A:  Pregnancy usually lasts between  56 to 65 days.  Of course, some cats' pregnancies may be longer or shorter.  For additional information on reproduction please see the article, "On Cats and Kittens" in our Past Issues section.

Q:  Where can I get a kitten?

A:  Unfortunately, there are more kittens available than families who want them.  That is why we suggest adopting a cat or kitten from a shelter or rescue organization.  For a partial list, check our Links page.  Additionally, many pet supply stores, especially the larger chains, have "adoption days" where you can view available animals.  One of our local veterinarian's offices offers animals for adoption as well.  Perhaps the same is true in your area.  If you have your heart set on a particular breed, you might find it at a shelter or rescue.  (We adopted a lovely white Persian cat and an American Eskimo dog from shelters.)  If you prefer to purchase a pet, find a reputable breeder, preferably one that has been recommended to you by someone you know.  Or, speak with area veterinarians who often have information on breeders and available cats and kittens.
